Lesson 8 of 81964–today7 min
From the iPhone to the cloud
On 9 January 2007, at Macworld in San Francisco, Apple announced the iPhone: a mobile phone, a widescreen iPod with touch controls and an internet device for email, web browsing, search and maps, all driven by a large multi-touch screen and your fingers. It went on sale in the United States that June, at $499 with 4 GB of storage or $599 with 8 GB.
A phone with that little storage could not hold your mail, your maps or your photos for long. More and more of what it showed came from somewhere else: computers in data centres that you would never see, rented by the hour.
