SQL queries: SELECT to HAVING
In 1974 Donald Chamberlin and Raymond Boyce, two researchers at IBM, presented SEQUEL, a “structured English query language” for Codd's relational model. Codd's own query languages were mathematical; they wanted something a non-programmer could read aloud.
A trademark clash later shortened the name to SQL. ANSI published the first SQL standard in 1986 and ISO adopted it in 1987. Half a century on, the language they sketched is the one data analysts, back-end developers and database administrators all share.
